2: The different families of object-oriented languages

The nature and origin of the object-oriented paradigm is rather mysterious, as (some might say) is the paradigm itself. Although it is now the dominant paradigm in computing, it is certainly not the only one, and the problems that it encountered at its outset are still there to plague both the language designer and the programmer. This tour takes in the three broad traditions, show how they arose and how they interacted, and how they still remain separate to this day.
